Permindar Kaur and Prem Sahib: Talks and Performances
2025
Thursday 4 September
Permindar Kaur and Prem Sahib: Talks and Performances
Overview
Permindar Kaur and Prem Sahib: Talks and Performances
From 6–7pm, Permindar Kaur will be in conversation with Roger Malbert, curator, writer, and former Head of Hayward Touring at the Southbank Centre (2000–2018), discussing her exhibition Mirror, Mirror and wider themes in her practice.
At 7.15pm, there will be a spoken performance with Prem Sahib and writer and performer Bhanu Kapil. The performance will respond to Prem Sahib: Doublesand its contents.
Visitors will also experience Prem Sahib’s Liquid Gold, which will illuminate the manor after dark. This work will be echoed by a second installation in a building in Southall, connecting the two sites for the evening.
One £12 ticket will grant you access to both talks. Guests are welcome to attend the full programme or either element.
Exhibitions will remain open throughout.
About Permindar Kaur
Permindar Kaur is a sculptor and installation artist whose playful approach of using objects related to childhood, such as toys and cots, explores the territory of cultural identity, home, and belonging. These objects resemble displaced domestic belongings which have been distorted and manipulated to invoke the uncanny. They are deceptively familiar in their appearance and initially might remind the viewer of innocence, childhood, and play; belying their sinister undertones.
Since the 1990s Kaur’s practice has investigated integration and belonging, particularly cultural identity. This July and September, Kaur will join The Art House as Resident Artist, to continue her research and interest in the ‘public’ and ‘private’, and ongoing investigation to the central question in her practice: ‘where is home?’.
About Prem Sahib
Prem Sahib is an artist whose work across sculpture, sound, film, painting and installation references the architecture of public and private queer spaces, structures that shape individual and communal identities, senses of belonging, alienation and confinement. Having grown up in Southall, London, their work at Pitzhanger Manor traces personal and political histories of the area and its surroundings; its communities, conflicts, and margins. Mixing abstraction and figuration, Sahib’s “destabilised minimalism” is suggestive of the body as well as its absence, drawing attention to traces of touch and frameworks of looking.
About Roger Malbert
Roger Malbert is a curator and writer and was head of Hayward Touring at the Southbank Centre, London, from 2000–2018. He has been a judge for the Jerwood Drawing Prize and has contributed regularly to The Independent, Art Monthly, the Times Literary Supplement, the Art Newspaper, and Modern Painters.
About Bhanu Kapil
Bhanu Kapil is a British-born poet and author of Indian descent. She is best known for her books The Vertical Interrogation of Strangers, Incubation: A Space for Monsters, and Ban en Banlieue. In 2020, Kapil won one of eight Windham-Campbell Literature Prizes.
