FREE to Ealing residents

Explore a unique insight into the lives and experiences of Ealing residents during the Covid-19 pandemic. From humour to sorrow, creativity to kindness, tragedy to hope, this exhibition of photographs taken by people across Ealing is a personal record of an extraordinary time.

Showing nearly 200 photographs taken across Ealing, the exhibition presents a genuine insight into the collective experience of our local West London community over the past year. These range from a restorative return to nature with the growing of vegetables from seed for the first time to keen gardening at the allotments, tender moments with a newborn premature baby in hospital, a letter from the London Ambulance Service thanking a little girl for lending her father to care for patients, a distribution project undertaken by the Young Ealing Foundation and Southall Community Alliance, affectionate portraits of family and friends and neighbours enthusiastically clapping for carers.

Here are some of our favourite comments so far:
“This exhibition is a must see. Relatable, relevant and reminiscent. Go see… support this brilliant gallery back with its doors open again” @New2Northfields

“The photos were highly evocative… poignant, funny, uplifting, and others uncomfortable and despairing. It’s been such a year, and we’re unlikely to experience anything like it again.” @sarahtonin_seeker

“This photo reminds us of a time when everything changed.

We were living in Mauritius until March 27th 2020. Our plan was to move to the UK later that year, but the pandemic resulted in us having to leave our home of 10 years and catch the last flight out to the UK, with only 6 hours’ notice.

This unexpectedly rapid departure meant that we had to live out of suitcases for several months until our belongings could be shipped to us. The children had very few toys and we had to return to good old-fashioned pen and paper for entertainment.

The first thing Eliza ever drew was a rainbow and during lockdown she drew hundreds. We had far too many to stick up on the walls so we added them to the windows, for passers-by to share on their daily walks.”

“My experience of lockdown was learning to grow food.

As a result of the first lockdown, and worried about not being able to get food easily when people were clearing the shelves in the supermarkets, I decided to dig up my lawn and grow vegetables from seed for the first time ever.

As a very anxious person, this distraction was a fantastic medicine. I became quite obsessed, and watching my seedlings grow was a great way to stave off the worries and anxiety from what was going on in the world outside.

Seeing life grow brlught so much contentment and joy and comfort from nature. And a wonderful new hobby was born.”

"Drawing and gardening have been very important to occupy me throughout the last year, especially as I was shielding.

My favourite landscapes are a combination of looking at things from the floor, and then straight up into the sky - the ground leading into a great expanse of nothing. But if you look carefully, there’s lots to be found.

This process of looking, allowing yourself to become absorbed by the landscape through mark making, has helped me cope with the last year. Trying to draw every blade of grass and every leaf in view is relaxing, and in searching for details, you discover so much more of the world outside your window.

For me, drawing is about hope. Plants are as pleased for the rain as they are for the sun, and a storm is beautiful because within grey skies there are hidden reds, yellows, blues, and all the colours.

I hope my drawings are happy-sad and hopeful."

"This picture was taken on the evening of Saturday, 19 December 2020 just minutes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson had appeared live on television to tell the nation that 'Christmas was cancelled'.

From midnight, everyone in London and the South East were required to stay at home and 'assume you have the virus.'

Mr Johnson was making his bombshell lockdown announcement just as the residents of Clovelly Road, Ealing W5 had arranged to gather together to sing some Christmas carols, led by a local composer and her family.

I was there because two of my children live in Clovelly Road with their young families. We had all been expecting to spend Christmas together.

This was the closest we were able to get to them until 29 March 2021 when the Tier 4 restrictions were eased. "

“This image represents holding onto hope.

A day before the pandemic was announced I gave birth three months early. What followed was long three month stay in a neonatal unit with restricted access to my baby. I was only allowed two hours a day and baby's dad and brother not at all. Somehow, despite the setbacks, we got through it.”
