Overview

We are excited to announce that the first episode of the new Series 47 of the BBC Antiques Roadshow, filmed at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer!

The BBC filmed three episodes at Pitzhanger on 19 May 2024, showcasing the beauty and history of Sir John Soane’s architectural masterpiece in Ealing, West London. We will announce the transmission dates for the other two episodes very soon, so subscribe to our newsletter and stay tuned!

In this first episode, Fiona Bruce delves into the rich history of Pitzhanger Manor, exploring the life of the 18th-century architect Sir John Soane and the celebrity friends he entertained, including the renowned artist JMW Turner, how Soane’s home served as a hub of creativity and intellect, hosting distinguished figures from art, finance, and politics, all within the stunning setting of his meticulously designed manor and gardens. It was great to hear how in the words of Fiona Bruce Sir John Soane’s ‘The house was not just a place for Soane to test his designs it was also a place for lavish entertaining‘.

Viewers discovered many exciting treasures including a set of watercolour paints that belonged to Queen Victoria, ‘dummy boards’ and not forgetting the rare wartime medal awarded to the carrier pigeon Mary!

It was lovely to learn more about Ealing’s rich history with the broadcaster Matthew Sweet who discusses the glory days of the Ealing comedies. some of Britain’s best-loved films produced just down the road from Pitzhanger.

Experience Grayson Perry’s vibrant storytelling in The Vanity of Small Differences, now open at Pitzhanger Gallery. This exhibition showcases Perry’s six large-scale tapestries exploring British class and taste, inspired by William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress.

You can also view the original 18th-century engravings by William Hogarth, including the complete series of A Rake’s Progress and the iconic pair Gin Lane and Beer Street. It is almost as if these pieces could feature on an episode of the BBC Antiques Roadshow themselves!
