BBC Antiques Roadshow Unveils Pitzhanger’s Restoration Journey

“It took more than three years to return Pitzhanger Manor to Soane’s original vision. And you can’t help feeling he would have appreciated the modern science and attention to detail that’s gone into the restoration… This whole project is a fascinating detective story.”

Fiona Bruce, BBC Antiques Roadshow

Overview

We are thrilled to invite you to watch the BBC Antiques Roadshow episode filmed at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, where our Director, Clare Gough, takes host Fiona Bruce on a special tour of Pitzhanger’s remarkable restoration, beginning 17 minutes into the episode. Clare shares insights into the three-year project to return Sir John Soane’s masterpiece to its original splendour, uncovering hidden colours and design details lost beneath layers of paint. Learn about Soane’s use of pigments inspired by his Grand Tour of Europe, including lapis lazuli and realgar—historical choices that speak to his innovative vision.

The BBC filmed three episodes at Pitzhanger, highlighting the beauty, history, and stories of this 18th-century architectural gem. Originally aired on BBC One from August to October 2024, these episodes showcase Fiona Bruce’s engaging narration as she explores Pitzhanger’s rich legacy, from Soane’s architectural inspirations to the hidden design choices throughout the house.

You can rewatch all three episodes on BBC iPlayer to experience the treasures and stories shared by our local community and the discoveries made by the Antiques Roadshow experts.

Plan your visit to explore Sir John Soane’s restored masterpiece in person. Wander through his carefully designed rooms and see the legacy of this historic house and gallery first-hand.
