Quilting Workshop with Tamira Kitchens
Quilts have very high significance in black history; many traditional quilt patterns originated in Africa, and were brought to America by enslaved people. They were used by slaves to send codes to each other at a time when reading and writing was illegal for them to do. This eventually helped them to find freedom though the ability to secretly communicate. Many enslaved women would use quilting as a creative tool which empowered them and gave them a sense of purpose, and it was a commonly used method of storytelling and teaching each other.
Unity and teamwork have been a crucial part of black history, and have often been the only source of motivation and power throughout history for people of colour. That is why this workshop is about working together, each making a small part of a larger piece of artwork. You can make up your own designs or use the materials given to you to recreate some traditional quilt patterns onto a square. Then we will stick together each person’s square to make one big piece of art like a quilt!
Drop in from 10:30am – 12:30pm in the Education Room.
