250 years ago #OnThisDay the English artist Joseph Gandy (RA) was born.

Gandy was an architectural theorist as well as an artist, sometimes called the ‘English Piranesi’, known mostly for his painted illustrations of Sir John Soane’s built and unbuilt designs.

This image, painted by Gandy, shows the Library at Pitzhanger Manor. Soane's plans for the Bank of England lie on the desk and his wife Eliza is visible, standing in the Breakfast room beyond.

Gandy died penniless and forgotten in an asylum in Devon in 1843, but was admired by the Surrealists in the early 20th century. A lot of his works are on permanent display at the Soane Museum in London - the fruits of a 40 year relationship with John Soane.
