Join New London Architecture and Jestico + Whiles for a spring evening at Pitzhanger.
Peeling back layers of history, extensions and overpainting, architects Jestico + Whiles and heritage experts Julian Harrap Architects led a three-year restoration project to return Pitzhanger to Soane’s original design.
With its canopy domed ceilings, radical decorative paint schemes and inventive use of space and light, Pitzhanger features many of Soane’s signature architectural elements that are prominent in his later work including Dulwich Picture Gallery and his city home in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Alongside the design of a new café and events building and refurbishment of the former library into a gallery and exhibition space, Jestico + Whiles reinstated important structural elements of Soane’s design, such as the conservatory demolished in 1901 and the dramatic central roof light which returns Pitzhanger to the silhouette Soane intended.
Over the course of the evening, there will be tours of the Manor led by the architects, the opportunity to hear first hand from decorative painter Alasdair Peebles about the techniques used to meticulously recreate hand-painted Chinese wallpaper in the Upper Drawing Room, as well as access to Pitzhanger’s current exhibition Anthony Caro: The Inspiration of Architecture showcasing the work of one of the 20th century’s most influential sculptors.
