Open Sundays: July

Overview

Celebrate the summer sunshine with our July Open Sundays!

Please note that our art workshops and storytelling sessions are drop-in events and are not intended to be registered art classes. These sessions tend to be very busy at the beginning, so arriving later on will result in less crowding.

2 July: Storytelling with Alim Kamara

Storyteller Alim Kamara from Storie Storie will give performances at 10:30am and 11:30am in the manor’s beautiful Georgian Eating Room.

Join artist Jennifer Mesrie for a Photomontage Workshop in the Education Room. Create your own collage using magazine cuttings!

Performances:

  1. 10:30am – 11:15am
  2. 11:30am – 12:15pm

Alim Kamara is a British-Sierra Leonean rapper and storyteller. As a child living in Sierra Leone, Alim would listen to Djelis (storytellers), admiring the way they weaved lessons through their tales. Stories quickly became central to his life, and when he moved to London and started his music career, he used this same technique to achieve number one singles in both Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

He established Storie Storie to share the traditional Sierra-Leonean folk tales of his childhood in the UK. Through the organisation, he performs and runs workshops through schools, businesses and festivals.

Alim and his inspirational speakers share cultural and life stories that demonstrate success, disappointments, persistence and hard work. They share the tools that empower listeners to feel happy, express themselves and succeed.

9 July: Buzz Buzz!

Combine craft with sound to create your own buzzing bee sound instrument using recycled card, simple paper technologies and a dash of creativity. Come and get buzz-y with artist Sarah Richardson and learn a little more about the life of bees at Pitzhanger.

16 July: Doodle Workshop

Come to Pitzhanger for an all-ages art workshop in the Education Room with artist Jennifer Mesrie! Inspired by the work of David Shrigley, create your own black and white doodle drawings.

There will also be a special screening of The South Bank Show: Anthony Caro in the Monks Dining Room at 11am, 39 years after the episode was first shown on British television. Hear Caro’s thoughts on how we can approach understanding abstract art and visit Pitzhanger’s current exhibition, Anthony Caro: The Inspiration of Architecture after the screening.

23 July: Material Play – Metal

Inspired by Caro’s use of metal within his sculptures, this workshop with artist Amy Leung will be themed around all things shiny and metallic. From tin foil to wire, aluminium packaging to metallic textures and mirror card, we will construct, play and respond to these materials to make assembled sculptures.  This workshop takes inspiration from Caro’s sculpture ‘The Eye Knows’ which used lots of found objects found in the metal industry and scrap yards.

30 July: Summer Swim

Come to Pitzhanger for an all-ages art workshop in the Education Room with artist Jennifer Mesrie! Create your own swimming pool painting inspired by David Hockney’s pool paintings.
