Largest display of Hodgkin’s prints, praised as “art to pierce the heart.”
Now open at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery (1 October – 8 March), Howard Hodgkin: In a Public Garden presents the most extensive display of Hodgkin’s original prints to date, spanning five decades of his career. Highlights include vibrant prints, rarely seen paintings, and film, shown throughout Sir John Soane’s restored country home.
The Times awarded ★★★★, calling it “extraordinary… art to pierce the heart.” Apollo and The Guardian also praised Hodgkin’s evocative approach to memory, colour and gesture.
Tickets include entry to both the exhibition and the historic Manor. Members enjoy unlimited visits, exclusive curator tours of Howard Hodgkin: In a Public Garden, shop and café discounts, and more.

Our Team
Rebecca Lyons looks forward to meeting the Pitzhanger community.
I am delighted to take up the role as the new director at Pitzhanger. As an art and cultural historian of the late eighteenth century/early nineteenth century, the opportunity to work in the beautiful setting of Sir John Soane’s country home in Walpole Park was very appealing.
My most recent previous role was as the director of the Royal Academy of Arts’ collections, libraries, archives and public programmes. I have also enjoyed working with some of the UK’s greatest contemporary artists and architects and love how the modern and contemporary blend with the historic at Pitzhanger too.
I firmly believe that everything we do is for the benefit and enjoyment of our public and our communities, and what a great community we have here. And to top it all off, we make our own delicious honey!
I look forward to seeing you at Pitzhanger, to introducing you to the rest of the team in the coming newsletters, and to all that this next chapter will bring.

Public Programme
Hear leading voices on Hodgkin’s legacy and influence.

A highlight of our season is the Curator’s Talk with Richard Calvocoressi in conversation with Nicholas Serota (13 November) — a rare opportunity to hear two major figures discuss Hodgkin in depth.
Also this autumn: poet Suzannah V. Evans performs Under the Blue (2 October), Shanay Jhaveri of the Barbican and artist Hannah Perry join a panel (4 December), and Richard Parry, Pitzhanger’s Head of Programmes, leads a special tour (6 November). Looking ahead, Director Rebecca Lyons speaks on Venice, Hodgkin and Soane (5 February) with more programme to be announced.
Families and Learning
Creative workshops and hands-on learning inspired by Hodgkin.

October Half-term (26–30 October) brings daily family-friendly activities across the manor and gallery, with Messy Play for under-5s on 31 October as part of our fortnightly Mini Makers series. Mini Makers also features Move and Flow and Music and Rhyme, designed especially for children aged 0–5.
Teachers can register for a two-day CPD on 7–8 October, offering practical printmaking workshops inspired by Hodgkin’s art. These programmes open new ways for children and educators alike to explore creativity.
Public Programme
Opera, weddings, markets and festive celebrations await.

On 6 November, Opera Prelude presents Storace and Soane, a narrated opera exploring the cultural world shared by Sir John Soane and soprano Nancy Storace. Couples can plan their big day at our Wedding Open Day (25 October).
Later in November, meet local makers at the Duck Pond Market (23 November), then step into the season with our festive programme: create your own decorations at the Christmas Wreath Workshop (26 November and 3 December), enjoy live music from Lumarie and Luke Matthews, and join a jewellery-making workshop with London Creative Gals Club at our Christmas Late (27 November).
Shop
